Yepun's laser strike

Taken: 2011-03-27, 04:46 UT
Place: Paranal Observatory, II Región, Chile
Exposure: 51'', ISO-1600, f/3.5
Camera: Canon EOS Rebel XS, 18-55 mm lens.
Comments: The Yepun telescope (UT4) and its Laser Guide Star Facility (LGSF), a wide-range laser (90-km) able to create an "artificial star" for calibrate the Adaptive Optics systems. In the background is visible the galactic center between Scorpius and Sagittarius. The faint glare toward the horizon is coming from the Moon, just about to rise.

This looks so fake. That's all and how fast can the laser travel?
